The Neumann M149 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Posted on February 19th, by Mitch in Blog. Comments Off on The Neumann M149 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

The M149 Tube built from 1995 to current, is a variable dual diaphragm microphone. The K49 capsule well known from the legendary U47 and M49 microphones is followed by a tube functioning as an impedance converter. In contrast to earlier concepts, utilizing a transformer, the tube is complemented with a transformerless output circuit design. The M149 Tube can feed long microphone cables without any coloration.

Two slide switches are located below the large, acoustically very open head grille. The selection switch at the front allows for one of nine directional patterns. The slide switch at the rear operates a seven-step high pass filter. It allows a very fine adjustment of the cut-off frequency.

Applications

There are nine polar patterns to choose from, making this microphone an ideal choice for a wide range of recording situations. As its ancestors, the M149 Tube is a … Read More »

Fastback Telefunken Stereo V72 Preamps

Posted on February 18th, by Mitch in Blog. Comments Off on Fastback Telefunken Stereo V72 Preamps

Development of the V72

The North West German Radio (NWDR), working in cooperation with the Institute of Broadcast Technology (IRT) of Hamburg, developed a completely new equipment standard for the German radio network. This led to the development of the historic V72 module. The V72 was developed by the NWDR under the technical supervision of Professor Nestler between 1949 and 1952 as a microphone and main studio amplifier. Nestler had previously been the head of R&D for the AEG/Telefunken Electro Acoustic Lab (ELA).

The V72 was modeled on the V41 and the circuits are almost identical with the exception of the gain control section. The V72 also utilized modern advancements like Noval glass tubes and a smaller housing, the “Danner” cassette module. The first 100 units were built at the NWDR Zentraltechnik. Serial numbers 101 to 300 were built by Maihak. These units … Read More »

Kawai Grand Piano

Posted on November 25th, by Mitch in Blog. Comments Off on Kawai Grand Piano

Throughout the country we have had many artists inquire, blog, and spread the word about our Grand Piano. I remember once being asked, “ Why does this piano sound and sit so well in the mix?”.  We talked about it for a while and concluded it was a blend of several things. The piano itself is a well balanced and built Kawai classic grand piano. We have the ability to move the piano around our 22 x 33 x 12 live room to capture the presence, and balance of the style of music we are recording. Our selection of classic ribbon microphones, and Neumann small diaphragm and tube microphones only add to the clarity and sound of the Kawai. This piano has been used on all genres of music here at Fastback, but it always comes down to how well the artist performs and how the … Read More »

Unexpected booking at Fastback!

Posted on September 9th, by Mitch in Blog. Comments Off on Unexpected booking at Fastback!

So we had a last minute booking at the studio recently, and it turned out to be really cool. These guys were playing the Key Arena that night, they were the guitar players and drummer for Lady Gaga’s band. Let me tell you these guys are really talented. They have their own side project called “Knives”. It’s like old school Rage Against the Machine meets At the Drive In, but with crazy chops! The drummer “Spanky” was on the cover of Modern Drummer last year, yeah he’s that good. The two guitarists Tim Stewart, and Ricky Tillo have chops for days! When they booked the session we had no idea who they were. They showed up and tore the place up! Seriously cool jams. It was a blast to have them in our studio, hopefully they will come back when … Read More »

Seahawks Fullback Michael Robinson Encourages Kids

Posted on August 13th, by jason@fastbackstudios.net in Blog. Comments Off on Seahawks Fullback Michael Robinson Encourages Kids

This is a short feature on “Mike Rob” formerly of the 2014 Superbowl champs the Seattle Seahawks. I mixed and mastered the audio here at Fastback Studios and it was published by VICE sports media outlet. It’s a really interesting story about a players perspective on life after football. It’s really encouraging that Michael, Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch, and other Seahawks took the time to spend with these kids teaching them the game. What is more impressive, is that Robinson teaches them that there is much more to life than just the football. He teaches the kids to plan their life, and to be smart about their career goals.

Audio Notes

It was quite a challenge to get all of the audio to fit together right. It was recorded on location in locker rooms, on the field, and in very noisy environments. … Read More »
